Through Media and Technology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Through Media and Technology - Essay Example Technology is cold but it is often more efficient than human beings who are more likely to make calculative and academic mistakes or be slowed by human considerations and errors. People are becoming more and more accustomed to getting what they want with a single click. Many experts feel that that elevated exasperation and deteriorated patience are only likely to get worse and separate people even more. The more we favor that perspective the more and more distant from one another people may become. We interact with technology on a regular basis every day. We cannot make a phone call and speak to a person without first speaking to a ââ¬Å"human-soundingâ⬠automated system to direct your calls. When we shop at grocery stores several have self-service checkout lanes where a friendly female voice directs you through the process and thanks to you for your patronage. The more commonplace this becomes the more desensitized we become to interacting with technology that sounds, behaves, and functions ever-increasing human ways. Children are being indoctrinated by robotic toys that resemble positive likable things, like dinosaurs and obedient puppies. These pleasing forms only work to make technology more and more appealing. However, they are still machines and are not capable of genuine emotion. It would not take long for humanity to become as empty and superficial as the technology they interact with. Human compassion, sympathy, empathy would likely all fade away in the face of greater efficiency and logic.

The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century Essay
The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring Use examples and details in your answer - Essay Example While many people consider technological devices to make our lives easier, they can also have a detrimental effect on our well-being. Itââ¬â¢s getting to the stage now where almost no one sends anything by post because it takes too long to reach its destination. This next century could see our virtual lives becoming just as significant as our real lives. Another change that the next century will bring is global wars. Although there have been global conflicts in the previous century, modern technology will result in the types of wars that we have never seen before. Long gone are the days where two armies came together and fought it out on the battlefield. Another element that will make world wars interesting over the next 100 years is the use of nuclear weapons. Countries such as Iran and North Korea have, or will have, the technology and desire to attack nations that they consider to be their enemies. Perhaps the most exciting change of this century will be the advances in medicines. Global sicknesses that were once thought of as deadly will be consigned to the history books. This will result in humans being able to live longer, which may be either a good or bad thing depending on who gains access to these advanced types of medicines. What we do know is that the standard of living will improve for most

The concept of a living Essay Example for Free
The concept of a living Essay The concept of a living will is to give you peace of mind about any health problems or issues that may arise in the future. Also, it addresses the choices that need to be made and your family members inability to make those decisions for you, regarding your health. Leaving the decisions up to your family members can be difficult for them. A living will allows you to make those choices ahead of time alleviating the stress for family members. It is important for anyone, over the age of 18, to have a living will. In the event of a terminal illness or having become critically injured, without a living will, no one has the right to make medical decisions that impact your life or determine whether you should live or die. These legal documents have different names but one goal; designating your wishes for healthcare when you are unable to do so. The legal document that is imperative to put your wishes into writing is called a living will.à Unlike a traditional will, a living will is primarily directed to medical personnel regarding the types of medical procedures you wish or do not wish to receive when you are terminally ill or incapacitated. The living will becomes operative when it is provided to your physician or healthcare provider and you are incapable of making healthcare decisions for yourself.à A durable power of attorney or also known as a health care proxy is a signed, dated, and witnessed legal document that authorizes an individual to act as a spokesperson or agent of an individual to handle his/her affairs after he/she becomes incompetent. An advance directive combines a living will and durable power of attorney into one document or two separate documents. As with any document, there is potential for problems. The biggest problem is the misinterpretation of the patientââ¬â¢s wishes by medical personnel.à Not specifically defining the terms ââ¬Å"incurable illness,â⬠or ââ¬Å"seriously incapacitated,â⬠can leave the physician to interpret their own meaning, unless specified. There are certain code statusââ¬â¢ that can also be too vague for interpretation. For instance, a chemical code in some hospitals means that you wish to be treated with medications only, while another hospital this code means no other procedures, (CPR or invasive procedures) are to be used. By using very specific terms in your living will can make your wishes known and can avoid potential problems. First and foremost, when executing any or all of these legal documents you must first check your stateââ¬â¢s statutes to determine its requirements for these legal documents. Each stateââ¬â¢s statutes differ, but provide the legal authority for you to make particular decisions in advance. Once you have done this, itââ¬â¢s time to start making important decisions such as; who will you choose to be your durable power of attorney, or health care proxy? How do I choose someone to make these choices in my best interest?à To make this decision, you may want to ask yourself a few questions to help you determine who could speak for you in a medical crisis: 1. Would this person be able to separate their own feelings from yours? 2. This person is able to handle conflict within your family, and medical personnel. 3. Knows you very well and understands whatââ¬â¢s important to you. 4. You trust this person in general and with your life. 5. Meets the legal criteria in your state. (Very important.) After requesting permission of the person whom you have chosen for your durable power of attorney and discussing your concerns, instructions, and wishes with them, refer to your attorney to discuss your stateââ¬â¢s policies on living wills and health care proxys. à Make your choices clear and foolproof. Next you will want to read and understand, possibly with your attorney present, the living will, a health care proxy, and the durable power of attorney forms, which is available online or from your attorney. Make sure you fully understand the contents of these forms as well as the choices that are to be made along with them. Consulting your physician about the type of care you wish to have or wish not to have, life prolonging treatments, or pain medications. You may also include organ donation in your will. Once the papers are complete and state statutes are followed, and the legal forms are signed, you will want to give copies to your doctor, healthcare proxy, and your family members. You will also want to keep a copy for yourself and this should be kept in an easily accessible location, or in a wallet type form. Laws governing living wills or advance directives vary state to state. These laws contain specific directions and requirements that must be met in order to be in compliance and assures the validity of the living will. For instance, The State of Rhode Islandââ¬â¢s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act states that you must have two witnesses sign and date the legal form and may not be related to you by blood or marriage, while Alaska requires no witnesses or notarization.
Different lan Technologies
Different lan Technologies 1. AIM To learn about different lan technologies and to design a network based on these lan technologies and to simulate these networks by a simulation tool know as opnet and by putting different loads on these networks and to study the performance of these networks. 2. Overview à à à à à Local area networks (LAN) are a group of devices which communicate with each other in a small geographical area like within a room or within a building. There are different topologies in LAN which are designed according to usage, cost, amount of traffic flow. The different topologies are star topology, bus topology (Ethernet), ring topology, FDDI. The main aim of this project is to design network and compare different lan topologies and to simulate these networks by putting different network loads and to analyse how these networks behave to the different traffic loads and by running the simulation for a long time. Analyse the results and then to decide which topology is the best. This project has been suggested by Dr Diane Gan. This project meets the guidelines of the Masters project and the requirements of the programme that i am studying and as i will be able to design an network and simulate it using opnet and to vary the traffic load and to analyse the result of the simulation and to decide which network topology is the best and efficient. After completion of the project i would be in a situation to tell about different parameters of the network like delays, packet inter arrival time, link utilisation, packet loss. 3. Objectives Literature review of different LAN topologies To design different LAN topologies Simulate different LAN topologies by varying the traffic loads say about 20%, 40%,70%,80% Analyse the quality of service (QOS) when an particular load is applied. To compare and analyse the results based on these simulations To decide which topology would be the best, looking at the results of the simulations and to suggest which topology would be better. How the objectives will be achieved Research on different networking books and different publications like IEEE, ACM etc. To learn to use opnet. Using opnet to design different LAN networks. To simulate these networks with different traffic loads like database traffic, ftp traffic, email traffic, web surfing, voip, video streaming, printing. To collect and put the result of these simulations on spreadsheet and to analyze the results. To check the results like loads at servers, packets loss, packets delivery time, utilization of the links. To plot the results on graph To decide which network topology is the best based on the results. 4. Resources To complete this project i would require Opnet Modeler A computer with high configuration so that i could store the network models and the simulations. 6. Two Kinds by Amy Tan Essay -- Two Kinds, Amy Tan
In ââ¬Å"Two Kinds,â⬠Amy Tan explores a theme of independence. Jing-me is an impressionable nine year old girl living in an apartment with her parents. She struggles with the high expectations of her mother, to become a prodigy. The conflict results in a rebellious independence. Tan develops Jing-meââ¬â¢s character as willful, defiant, and insecure. To begin, Tan demonstrates that Jing-meââ¬â¢s willfulness stands in the way of her success. For example, after failing many of her mothers prodigy tests, she begins to hate them. One night after another failed test, she adopted ââ¬Å"new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of wonââ¬â¢tsâ⬠(Tan 596). Jing-me decides that she is not going to let her mother change who she is, so she stops trying to be a prodigy. She demonstrates her willfulness when she ââ¬Å"performed listlessly,â⬠and ââ¬Å"pretended to be bored,â⬠when presented with further tests (596). Jing-meââ¬â¢s headstrong attitude continues to stand in the way and keeps her from successfully learning to play the piano. She ââ¬Å"was determined not to try, not to be anybody differentâ⬠that ...

The Controversy of Interracial Marriages Essay -- Interracial Marriage
The Controversy of Interracial Marriages In today's society there is a lot of controversies over interracial marriages and dating. Interracial couples may have recently become very popular. An interracial marriage is defined as the marriage or unity of two heterosexual people, each of different races. In today's world it is happening more and more despite that many people do in fact disapprove of it and it does have an effect on the children and other family members. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã As a starting point, let us make it clear that there are no references in scripture that forbid interracial marriages, although some people take scriptures out of context to prove otherwise. While in the past, people were more likely to stick with their own kind; society has seen a significant growth in interracial relationships. By integrating with different cultures and nationalities, we are doing away with hate, racism, and prejudice. The most common type of interracial marriage is where a black male marries a white female. According to the book in 1990, 46 percent of marriages were interracial. It is a fact that most interracial married people live far away from their families. Two people from two different backgrounds will likely experience a significant number of challenges and communication barriers. With different cultures come different customs. With different customs come misunderstandings. With misunderstandings come pain and grief. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Interracial relationships provide individuals...
Economies Of Scale Scope Essay
Economies of Scope: An economic theory stating that the average total cost of production decreases as a result of increasing the number of different goods produced. For example, McDonalds can produce both hamburgers and French fries at a lower average cost than what it would cost two separate firms to produce the same goods. This is because McDonalds hamburgers and French fries share the use of food storage, preparation facilities, and so forth during production. Another example is a company such as Proctor & Gamble, which produces hundreds of products from razors to toothpaste. They can afford to hire expensive graphic designers and marketing experts who will use their skills across the product lines. Because the costs are spread out, this lowers the average total cost of production for each product. Economies of scale are the cost advantages that a business can exploit by expanding their scale of production. The effect of economies of scale is to reduce the average (unit) costs of production. Here are some examples of how economies of scale work: Technical economies of scale: Large-scale businesses can afford to invest in expensive and specialist capital machinery. For example, a supermarket chain such as Tesco or Sainsburyââ¬â¢s can invest in technology that improves stock control. It might not, however, be viable or cost-efficient for a small corner shop to buy this technology. Specialisation of the workforce Larger businesses split complex production processes into separate tasks to boost productivity. By specialising in certain tasks or processes, the workforce is able to produce more output in the same time.
